The Thai Vegetarian Spring: Big Bite Bangkok, Bo.lan Farmers’ Market and the Veggie Guide

The Thai Vegetarian Spring: Big Bite Bangkok, Bo.lan Farmers’ Market and the Veggie Guide

The Vegetarian Thai Food Guide is finally up and available for sale!

Similar to the meat lover’s version, the Eating Thai Food Guide,  you’ll find a ton of helpful information including phrases, how to say them, and the Thai script for the lazy point-and-order method.

The guide is the result of eating vegetarian food for an entire month last year. During the month of meat-detox we discovered a few genres of food such as raw food, vegan, and macrobiotic which we previously categorized in our brains under the generic, careless label of “SALADS.”

However contrary to whatever we thought, the green and conscious-eating scene in Bangkok is not only exciting, but flourishing. Bangkok is a city with a burgeoning ‘Vegetarian Spring’ where across the spectrum restaurants, chefs, and the hungry are calling for healthy, well made food.

Not long ago in Bangkok you had to become the Sherlock Holmes of all things organic to investigate hearsay, locate the real thing and finally taste the elusive, healthy item you wanted.

Never more. One sign this is changing is the emergence of collaborative events gathering a community around a healthy food scene which seemed hopelessly fragmented a few months ago.

Over the past weekend I jumped into one such event, a Farmers’ Market hosted by the well known Bo.lan Restaurant.

The chefs turned over the patio and drive way of their restaurant to a great variety of local producers showcasing their goods. From goat cheese to all natural cooking and cosmetic oils, to several vendors with organic rice and produce; there was plenty to choose from. They plan on hosting the event once a month on the first Saturday of each month, so check out another one if you missed it.

I finished Saturday with a quiet dinner at Seven Spoons, a unique new restaurant specializing in organic Mediterranean style food. Seemed ideal to finish the evening there reminiscing about the first day of our vegetarian thai food challenge which began with sneak peek treats from the Seven Spoons’ menu before the restaurant had opened.

With the help of restaurants and small vendors we love, like Seven Spoons, Eating Thai Food is also playing a special role in hosting a similar, but more eating-focused event called Big Bite Bangkok. This is an event we dreamed up several months ago, but were delayed launching by the severe flooding.

Big Bite is a tasting party on January 29th 11-2pm, created to match up the city’s foodies with high quality food makers. The event will be free with a suggested charity donation and attendees will come to the parking lot of the Maduzi Hotel where they can taste bites of all the food and buy what they like to take home.

January has already been an exciting month for Eating Thai Food.

We’ve been working hard on plans to make the site more awesome this year. That means more interaction with our readers, more scoops on where to feast, and top notch products like the Vegetarian Thai Food Guide to make sure you’re navigating your way to memorable meals!
