Good Eats in Hua Hin at Ruamsaeb Yokkhok (รวมแซบ ส้มตำยกครก)
Just the lunch before tackling that 1 kilo lobster at the Hua Hin night market, we had eaten a pretty decent lunch at Ruamsaeb Yokkhok (รวมแซบ ส้มตำยกครก).
During my most recent visit to Hua Hin, I actually went to this restaurant a few times, one because of the good location, and two, because the food was pretty decent.
Though mainly an Isaan restaurant, they really served a menu of Thai dishes that included just about everything.
So while I normally try to stick with Isaan food when it’s an Isaan restaurant, in our hunger we decided to try a variety of dishes – all of it sounding wonderful.
We began with the gai yang (ไก่ย่าง) – roasted in the rotisserie chicken style of Thailand, in a big clay vessel, like a tandoor.
It was the chicken that made me first fall in love with Ruamsaeb Yokkhok (รวมแซบ ส้มตำยกครก), it was perfection. The chicken was incredibly juicy, and it slipped off the bone.
The skin and meat underneath was oozing with flavor – overflowing with chicken juices.
Price – 120 THB – for 1/2 a chicken
Their som tam (ส้มตำไทย) was average, nothing better than anywhere else, but very good.
I did like that they served it in a krok, a nice touch that I’ve never seen anyone else do.
Price – 35 THB
Yam tua pu (ยำถั่วพู), also known as winged bean salad, is a refreshing sweet and sour Thai salad. It’s flavored with minced pork, prik pao roasted chili sauce, and fried shallots.
Price – 85 THB
Along with the chicken, another dish you must order is the tom saap kraduk on (ต้มแซบกระดูกอ่อน). It was spicy, sour, herbaceous and there were plenty of meaty chunks of pork inside. One of the better tom saap’s I’ve ever had.
The next day we returned again for lunch, sitting at the same table.
Along with the chicken and tom saap moo, we ordered pad kra pao gai (กระเพราไก่), stir fried minced chicken with holy basil. A pile of pad kra pao emerged from the kitchen, laced with chillies, and full of flavor. It was a little too sweet, but it was still so good.
Something I had never eaten before is larb moo tod (ลาบหมูทอด), or deep fried larb – so I couldn’t resist.
What is larb tod? Take a normal plate of larb moo (minced pork, onions, lime, fish sauce, chillies), form all the ingredients into small patties, and deep fry them to a crisp like bhajias.
It was crunchy larb, and along with fragrant fried kaffir lime leaves, it was very tasty.
Price – 70 THB
The Bottom Line
If you’re in Hua Hin and looking for a great overall Thai restaurant with a good atmosphere, Ruamsaeb Yokkhok (รวมแซบ ส้มตำยกครก) will hit the spot. The chicken and the tom saap moo are a must.
My only complaint is that a few of the dishes were on the sweet side, so it you don’t like too much sweetness in your dishes, tell them to go easy on the sugar.
