I’ve sampled a quite a few variations of Asian shaved ice treats throughout my travels.

Some of them have been good, others not so much. Thailand’s shaved ice mixture, known as nam kang sai, is not something I eat often, but it definitely is a refreshing treat from time to time.

The basic construction of Thai nam kang sai (น้ำแข็งใส) includes a variety of toppings, covered with a spoon of crushed ice, and bathed in sweet syrup and fragrant coconut milk.

The more toppings available, the more confusing it becomes to order, but also, the more impressive it is!

There are essentially two different ways to order nam kang sai, point and choose to create a bowl exactly to your linking, or take the easy approach and just get the ruam mit (น้ำแข็งใสรวมมิตร) version (mixed toppings, as decided by the vendor).

Ran Chang Seem See (ร้านเช็งซิมอี๊) is a well known Thai shaved ice restaurant located on Sukhumvit 103, a road known as Udom Suk. They have a seriously impressive spread of toppings to choose from.

Candied cassava, black jelly, and nam daeng (red syrup) was my girlfriend’s choose. I still can’t get myself to enjoy artificial red syrup, it’s a flavor I don’t think I’ll ever be a fan of. The other ingredients were great.

I, not having a clue what toppings I wanted, just went for the Nam Kang Sai Ruam Mit (น้ำแข็งใสรวมมิตร).

The goodies included pieces of jackfruit, coconut jelly, candied taro, water chestnuts, and kernels of sweet corn. I was impressed by the coconut milk and syrup combination, it was sweet, but not overly so like it can be at some places. The coconut milk was wonderfully fragrant, rich yet not too heavy.

Ran Chang Seem See (ร้านเช็งซิมอี๊) also serves a few other Thai dessert classics like my all-time favorite, bua loy nam khing. I was sweeted out by my shaved ice, so didn’t try it, but I would assume it’s top notch.

The Bottom Line

I don’t eat Thai desserts often, but this nam kang sai was especially delicious because of the impressive variety of toppings to choose from.

If you happen to be in the Udom Suk area, it’s worth a refreshing stop.
